The second of three sermons narrating Jesus’ Passion according to John’s Gospel. In this sermon, we see how unfairly Jesus was treated. He was cruelly scourged, even though he was found to be “not guilty” four times in this passage. The Passion was an incredibly unfair ordeal for Jesus to endure. And indeed, all acts of love are unfair. Just as the cross was unfair, because it meant that Jesus was giving us something that was rightfully his. So too, all acts of love are unfair, because they all involve the giving up on something that is rightfully ours. But, Jesus was willing to endure the unfairness, and he calls us to be willing to endure unfairness for the sake of one another.
