This passages is one of those stories which needed to be told. John, when writing his Gospel, couldn’t include everything that Jesus did, otherwise the world would not be able to contain the books he would have to write (John 21:25). However, although this passage did not fit into John’s carefully organised ‘7 signs’ and ‘7 I am statements’, the early church thought it too important a story to leave out completely. This story is important because it is a story of the Gospel. This woman is able to walk away, without condemnation, because one day Jesus would be condemned in her place.
