Jesus completely redefines everything about who God is, by ‘laying his life down’ for his friends. At the cross, we see a picture of God which is radical in many ways. At the cross, we see that God is love, not power or riches or comfort or glamour, but love. So, Jesus prepares his disciples for that mind-blowing moment, by ‘laying down’ his clothes in love. Having washed his disciples feet, which is all about Jesus laying down not only his clothes, but his reputation, power and comfort, Jesus commands his disciples to do the same. Just as Jesus redefines the disciples’ perspectives of God, by dying for the sake of others; so too, we are to redefine the world’s perspective of God, by dying for the sake of others.
