John’s Gospel is often thought of as thinking very highly of Christ. The other Gospels begin with Jesus on earth, but John’s Gospel begins with Jesus “In the beginning…” (1:1). The other Gospels begin with Jesus in the womb of Mary, but John’s Gospel begins with Jesus “in the bosom of the Father” (1:17, the old American Standard Version). But, have you ever considered why John presents Jesus in this ‘exalted’ fashion? Is it that he is simply more developed and advanced than the other Gospels? Has he received greater revelation that the others? Or does his presentation of Jesus in this manner somehow get to the very heart of his message for us today?
